Using a United States number for SMS verification

An American number does not tell you what kind of line it is. Mobile lines, landlines and VoIP lines share the same area codes and often the same central office blocks, so the digits reveal nothing about the line type, and the United States has no mobile prefix at all. American services therefore check through carrier lookup services, which return values such as mobile, landline, fixed VoIP and non-fixed VoIP. A shared public number rarely resolves to a consumer mobile line, and any signup running that check can decline it on that basis alone.

The format underneath is fixed. Numbers run to ten digits after +1: a three-digit area code, a three-digit central office code, then a four-digit line number, written as (212) 555-0143. Both the area code and the central office code must start with a digit from 2 to 9, and neither can take an N11 form such as 411 or 911. The plan is run by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator, a role Somos holds under contract to the Federal Communications Commission, and country code 1 is shared with Canada and much of the Caribbean, so +1 alone does not mean American. Area codes were geographic in origin, but wireless number portability arrived in November 2003, so one now shows only where a number was first issued. The FCC also requires a permanently disconnected US number to age at least 45 days before reassignment.

Verification texts often arrive from a five- or six-digit short code, leased through the U.S. Short Code Registry that CTIA administers and iconectiv operates. Businesses texting from ordinary ten-digit numbers instead must register a brand and a campaign under A2P 10DLC through The Campaign Registry, and the major carriers filter unregistered application traffic.

Identity is checked somewhere else entirely. There is no national identity card, so federal agencies sign people in through Login.gov or ID.me, now the only two ways into Social Security's online services, and Login.gov lists Google Voice and similar VoIP numbers, premium-rate numbers and most prepaid numbers as unsupported for identity verification. Payment apps rest on the same ground: Venmo cannot verify you without a Social Security number or ITIN, Cash App wants a legal name, date of birth and SSN digits, and Zelle moves money only between US bank accounts. Banks and federal portals turn a shared line away, correctly. Keep this to signups you would not mind being public, and assume a stranger reads each message first.

US numbers are accepted on virtually every major platform. WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal all accept US numbers, though some services (like Cash App, Venmo) require a US-based real number.

Numbers in this range run on Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, US Cellular. United States spans 6 time zones from UTC-5 to UTC-10, so allow for the offset when you are waiting on a code.
