Using a Netherlands number for SMS verification

Dutch verification is built around identity schemes rather than around phone numbers, and that decides most of what follows. The tax office, student finance and municipal portals all sit behind DigiD, and DigiD needs a BSN before you have an account at all; the SMS code it sends goes to the number already registered on that account. Insurers and webshops use iDIN, where you prove who you are by logging in through your own bank, and the same route handles 18-plus age checks for the Nederlandse Loterij. itsme launched here in June 2026 alongside iDIN and is due to replace it in 2028. Companies use eHerkenning. None of those opens with a phone number alone.

The refusals are therefore structural. DigiD, Dutch banks, and any iDIN or itsme identity or age check are not phone checks in the first place, so a shared line has nothing to offer them. Tikkie, ABN AMRO's payment-request app, is the sharper case: it recognises a mobile number to decide which account to pay, so a public one should never be attached to it. Everything arriving here is visible to whoever opens the page, which makes an account whose password reset lands on this number effectively open to strangers.

The digits themselves are simple enough. A Dutch mobile number is ten digits written nationally, the trunk zero, the mobile digit 6, then an eight-digit subscriber number, so 06 12345678 at home and +31 6 12345678 from abroad. The official numbering plan puts handsets in the 061 to 065 and 068 ranges and reserves 066 for paging, and since 2014 data-only and machine-to-machine SIMs have been pushed onto longer 097 numbers to stop the 06 space running dry. The plan is set by the Minister of Economic Affairs; the Autoriteit Consument & Markt, the ACM, allocates blocks from it to providers. Numbers move between operators through the shared COIN platform, so nothing after the 06 reliably identifies a network.

That leaves the code you read once. Marktplaats, Thuisbezorgd.nl and bol all ask for a mobile number, but Marktplaats makes SMS security mandatory on accounts, so a line hundreds of people share will not hold up as a lasting login. If the account matters, buy a Dutch prepaid SIM. Successive governments have declined to introduce ID registration for prepaid, unlike Germany, France, Spain and Italy, so a local number is quick to get and actually yours.

Dutch numbers work for the vast majority of OTP services. Particularly useful for Dutch e-commerce sign-ups (Bol.com, Coolblue) and travel platforms headquartered in the country.
