Using a Sweden number for SMS verification

Anonymous Swedish numbers ended on 1 August 2022. Since that date a prepaid subscription has had to be registered with a name, address and personnummer or equivalent identifier, verified against an identity document such as a passport or driving licence, and cards left unregistered were disconnected in February 2023. A Swedish mobile is now expected to belong to somebody in particular, and that expectation is the background against which every Swedish service reads a number like this one.

Above it sits BankID, the bank-issued electronic ID administered by Finansiell ID-Teknik BID AB, which only people holding a Swedish personnummer can obtain, with Freja eID+ as the main approved alternative. Anything consequential runs on it. Swish needs a Swedish bank account, BankID and a Swedish phone number together. The Kivra digital mailbox asks for your personnummer and Mobile BankID at signup. The 1177 health portal, Skatteverket and Forsakringskassan work the same way. Tradera, the Swedish auction site, has required BankID for every Swedish private account since spring 2023, and operators licensed by Spelinspektionen are wired into the Spelpaus self-exclusion register, which is an eID check by design. A shared number opens none of it, whatever country it comes from.

The numbering itself is administered by Post- och telestyrelsen (PTS), the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority, which assigns operators blocks from the national plan. Mobile telephony sits in five non-geographic ranges only: 70, 72, 73, 76 and 79. All five are fixed at nine digits in national significant form, so a real Swedish mobile reads 073 XXX XX XX at home, ten digits with the trunk zero, and +46 73 XXX XX XX from abroad. The neighbouring ranges are not consumer phones: PTS reserves 71 for mobile broadband and machine-to-machine telematics on thirteen-digit numbers, and 74 for paging. Sweden has run full mobile number portability since September 2001 through a central reference database operated by SNPAC, the Swedish Number Portability Administrative Centre, appointed by PTS, which also publishes an e-service reporting which operator currently holds a given number.

Use a number here only where an SMS code is the entire verification step. A code you can read on this page, a stranger can read too, and several people may be watching it at once. Do not route password resets, bank codes or anything tied to your identity through it, and never set it as the recovery contact for an account you intend to keep.
